Position: Academic Fieldwork Coordinator/Faculty for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

Position Description:  The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC) serves primarily to coordinate activities of the academic faculty and fieldwork educators for the purposes of providing education and direction to students regarding didactic education and fieldwork clinical educational courses; as well as evaluating students’ performance in clinical educational courses. This position is assigned compliance with the Accreditation Standards for An Associate-Degree-Level Educational Program For The Occupational Therapy Assistant and prepares and is responsible for all administrative duties associated with accreditation requirements for fieldwork education and fieldwork sites. The AFWC serves as liaison between the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at South Arkansas Community College and the clinical educational programs at fieldwork sites and fieldwork educators. In addition, the AFWC will teach assigned courses and participate in all aspects of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. This position requires travel to the various clinical education sites as well as other travel associated with state and national activities. This position requires some evening, weekend, and overnight work hours. This position reports directly to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Director and the Dean of Health Science. This is a core-faculty position of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.


Minimum:  Possess an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant with the candidate completing a Baccalaureate degree within 18 months of hire, with both degrees being awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional or national accrediting body. The AFWC must be licensed (or eligible for licensure in Arkansas) in good standing, have current NBCOT certification, and have a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience, which includes student fieldwork education; teaching experience preferred. Must have experience with the group service delivery model. Clinical experience must be documented in areas in which the AFWC is hired to teach (will depend on areas of need for the Program at time of hire).

Preferred: Possess a Baccalaureate, Master’s, or Doctorate, degree in Occupational Therapy OR Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant with a Baccalaureate degree in another field.  All degrees must be awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional or national accrediting body.

Terms: This is a full-time, 12-month position

Duties will include, but is not limited to:

  • Identifies and secures sites for fieldwork activities. Ensures fieldwork educators are licensed, regulated and/or credentialed as needed for their professional vocational position at the respective facilities.
  • Reviews the quality and appropriateness of fieldwork sites in collaboration with the Program Director, and other faculty members.
  • Develops fieldwork objectives in collaboration with fieldwork site coordinators, educators, the Program Director, and other faculty members.
  • Initiates and maintains communication with the local and regional fieldwork sites’ personnel/fieldwork educators and students. Educates fieldwork personnel regarding accreditation standards, the curriculum model, instructional design, course content, fieldwork expectations and all other applicable information.
  • Secures agreements with the fieldwork sites for fieldwork education.
  • Assigns students to fieldwork settings, in collaboration with the Program Director, and other faculty members,
  • Teaches assigned courses for classroom and laboratory activities;
  • Collect and submit requested and/or required reports for various internal and external purposes, including course and/or program assessment reports.

·         Develop master and course syllabi per college guidelines and templates and revise as needed.

  • Utilize best practice teaching methods, including but not limited to: face-to-face teaching, use of simulated environments, clinic work, co-teaching, and use of virtual Learning Management System.
  • Communicates with on-campus departments/personnel, to ensure the provision of required occupational therapy/medical/rehabilitation information is provided to students.
  • Leads the Program’s student professional attribute evaluation process.
  • Participates with Program and curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment work.
  • Leads the students’ efforts with service learning activities and coordinates the Program’s service learning work (includes, but is not limited to: Scholarship Application work).
  • Educate students about the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination and leads academic-based work and other associated activities toward student preparation for the national certification examination.
  • Orients students to responsibilities and protocol for fieldwork education courses.
  • Monitors facilitation of clinical reasoning and reflective practice during fieldwork courses.
  • Counsels and arbitrates as needed with students and fieldwork educators on matters of concern (done both in a virtual context and physical context).
  • Collaborates with clinical fieldwork educator in assigning the final appraisal (grading) of the student. Ensures students are familiar with evaluation tool use for student fieldwork performance.
  • Provides education opportunities to prepare or enhance fieldwork educators’ knowledge and skills as it relates to fieldwork courses.
  • Serves actively on the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Advisory Committee and attend departmental, division, and/or college meetings/events as directed or required.
  • Co-sponsor for student Omega Theta Alpha club.
  • Advisor for the student honor society.
  • Advisor for Pay-It-Forward program.
  • Advise students who have declared Occupational Therapy Assistant as their major and students who are interested in occupational therapy assistant education.
  • Provide continual advising and student specific assistance, as needed, for Program students.
  • Maintain organized system of student and program records, abiding by college, accreditation, and/or state/federal requirements.
  • Participates in all activities of the accreditation process for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
  • Participates in Program department upkeep, inventory, and procurement of supplies and tools.
  • Assures compliance with the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards for Fieldwork activities and assigned teaching duties.
  • Commits to continued professional development in all required areas.
  • Actively contributes to South Arkansas Community College as a whole, serves on College committees as a faculty member, and provides community service.
  • Actively participates in annual evaluation processes related to job performance as directed by the South Arkansas Community College Plan for Faculty evaluation and incorporate associated strategies to address continuous improvement for development and learning.
  • Attends and participates in college events as required and/or directed by the college.
  • Functions according to the current, and will abide by any future revisions of the: American Occupational Therapy Association Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice for Occupational Therapy, Arkansas State Medical Board Arkansas Medical Practices Acts and Regulations pertaining to Occupational Therapy, and National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy Professional Practice Standards.
  • Is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and utilizes its services to advance student education and the fieldwork component of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program (such as, but not limited to: active involvement in the AOTA Fieldwork Coordinator List-serve, use of professional documents in teaching).
  • Is a member of the Arkansas State Occupational Therapy Association.
  • Coordinates community-employer based recruitment activities focused toward student graduate employment within the occupational therapy profession and participates in student recruitment and Program marketing activities.
  • Is a resource for graduates and the community-at-large.
  • Continues with current certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy per his or her highest occupational therapy education level.
  • Continues current Arkansas state occupational therapy license per his or her highest level of occupational therapy education.
  • Abide by college policies and procedures in the South Arkansas Community College Administrative Procedures Manual (APM) and catalog.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
